Preview guide · reviewed 17 September 2026. The mechanics below come from BlizzCon preview sources. They have been source checked, but have not been tested by this wiki in a release build. Talent articles distinguish recorded ranks from estimates and missing text.

Warlock — The Warlock preview uses Mana, demons, damage-over-time effects, and several abilities involving Soul Shards. Affliction, Demonology, and Destruction organize different interactions between those systems.[1]

Browse all 52 Warlock talents with icons, ranks, prerequisites, and individual source notes.

Choose a reading path

The following is an editorial route through the preview, not a recommended point allocation.[1]

Talent tree What to compare Start with
Affliction Persistent effects, drains, and effects that depend on what is already on the target. Distinguish the number of qualifying effects from raw spell damage. Improved Drains, Pandemic, Soul Siphon, Drain Hope
Demonology Demon-specific bonuses, summoning, and sacrifice interactions. Check which demon must be active or sacrificed for a particular effect. Improved Sayaad, Demonic Sacrifice, Soul Link, Demonic Pact
Destruction Direct Fire and Shadow spells and interactions involving Immolate or resources. Read the trigger and the resulting school bonus separately. Conflagrate, Bane of Havoc, Shadow and Flame, Incinerate

Abilities and changes worth checking

These are summarized from the pinned community demo transcription. Baseline spells and talents are identified separately where the source supports that distinction.[1]

  • Banes and Curses. The preview export separates the two categories and records simultaneous use of one of each. It identifies Bane of Agony as the renamed former Curse of Agony.
  • Subjugate Demon. The export records this as the renamed Enslave Demon. A renamed ability should not automatically be counted as an additional spell.
  • Incubus. Recorded as a separately named summon alongside the Succubus; the Demonology references include the shared Sayaad terminology.

Plan a first beta session

These are suggested checks for learning the class and collecting useful evidence; they are not claims about the strongest build.

  • For Affliction, count only the effects named by Improved Drains when comparing targets with different debuffs.
  • For Demonology, record the sacrificed demon and the newly summoned demon separately before testing Demonic Pact.
  • For Destruction, track whether Conflagrate consumes Immolate and whether Shadowburn returns a Soul Shard at the tested talent rank.

Race choice

Use the Warlock race list to separate officially announced additions from the broader preview roster. Follow the linked race guides for recorded racials; a racial tooltip does not establish a universal best choice.

How the preview plays

Talent evidence: These examples explain the source's preview descriptions. A description remains an estimate unless its individual rank is explicitly labeled source-confirmed in the linked talent article. Exact values and the interactions inferred from them remain provisional until checked for that rank and build. Source checked means the references were reviewed; it does not mean the mechanics were tested.[1]

Crix's Icy Veins report describes hands-on level-38 testing and inspection of higher-level trainer entries. That is useful preview evidence, but a trainer listing does not measure a finished level-60 build.[2]

Affliction: distinguish damage, criticals, and recovery

Drain Hope temporarily strengthens your other Shadow damage-over-time effects on its target. Improved Drains instead counts your other Affliction effects to improve Drain Life and Drain Soul, with a cap and an additional low-health condition for Drain Soul. Pandemic concerns the critical-damage bonus of a named set of spells. These descriptions should not be merged into a single universal modifier for every periodic effect.[1]

Soul Siphon speeds the damage from Drain Life and Drain Soul while reducing Drain Life healing. Faster damage therefore has a recovery trade-off. The catalog labels rank 3 source-confirmed: its description increases the damage rate by 50% and reduces Drain Life healing by 20%. This rank has stronger source support than a linear extrapolation from the estimated rank 1; it is still preview data.[1]

Demonology: keep track of both demons

Demonic Sacrifice consumes the summoned demon for a benefit determined by its type. Ordinarily, summoning a demon ends that benefit. Demonic Pact changes the rule: a different demon can stay active alongside the sacrifice effect, while resummoning the sacrificed type still ends it. Record both the sacrificed and active demon when comparing setups.[1]

Demonic Energies connects your spell damage and Life Tap to your pet's health and Mana. Demonic Brand lowers the Warlock's Searing Pain threat and gives the pet a limited number of enhanced, high-threat follow-up attacks. Neither talent proves that the pet can safely tank a particular group encounter.[1]

Destruction: check the target and damage school

Incinerate gains damage against an Immolated target. Shadow and Flame connects Conflagrate to a Shadow-damage benefit and Shadowburn to a Fire-damage benefit; it also changes Immolate consumption and shard refunds according to rank. A Soul Shard refund is not the same as removing every other cost.[1]

Bane of Havoc transfers a share of the Warlock's damage to other targets onto the marked enemy. The recorded limit permits one Havoc target, and only one Bane from that Warlock on a given target. It is a reason to watch which enemy carries which Bane, especially near controlled enemies.[1]

Spellstones and preview measurements

The recorded rank-1 Create Spellstone makes a weapon enchant providing spell haste and Shadow spell damage. Its school restriction matters when comparing Fire and Shadow abilities. The export still marks the Create Firestone description as Classic fallback, so that entry cannot verify Forever's Firestone behavior.[1]

Icy Veins reports that haste did not speed periodic damage or drain channels in its tested demo. That observation needs a build-specific beta recheck before it becomes a permanent stat rule; no final haste ranking is assigned here.[2]

New race option

Blizzard explicitly announced Troll Warlocks.[3] Use the racial guides to compare recorded abilities and their conditions. A strong racial tooltip alone does not decide a race ranking.

What remains unresolved

Demon rankings, final shard acquisition and storage behavior, leveling efficiency, and a final damage-over-time priority list need separate tests. The existence of Soul Link does not by itself establish a supported tank role.

For corrections, record the game build, character level, spell or talent rank, and the observed interaction. Follow Project:Data policy and compare against Warlock talents before replacing preview information.
