Legacy system
Legacy turns challenges into shared progress, separate character allocations, and cosmetic rewards. Announced launch limits: 65 earnable points; 16 spendable per character.[1]
Use the tables below to select a test target. Record the displayed challenge, point total, and allocation separately when submitting a correction.
Challenges shown in the preview
Reported BlizzCon examples, one point per milestone:[1]
| Example subjects | Milestones reported |
|---|---|
| Druid and Warrior | Character levels 25, 45, 60 |
| Blacksmithing and Engineering | Profession skill 150, 225, 300 |
Other reported categories include Adventure, Dungeons, Raids, and Player vs. Player.[1] These examples are not a complete challenge catalogue. They do not prove that repeating the same milestone on another character grants another point. Check the exact challenge wording and completion state before planning around it.
Three trees
The examples below follow the wiki's 16 September Talents Forever snapshot.[2] Open a perk for its recorded rank limits and evidence.
| Tree | Focus | Example references |
|---|---|---|
| Adventure | Leveling and exploration | Well Rested · Talented · Field Guide |
| Professions | Crafting and gathering | Working Overtime · Bountiful Harvest · Master Chef |
| Resourcefulness | Everyday utility | Reinforce · Permanence · Reagent Economy |
Points and characters
If your account has unlocked 16 points, your Druid and Warrior can each allocate those 16 independently. Spending them on one character leaves the other's allocation available.[3]
Keep two separate notes when planning: points your account has earned, and points you intend to allocate on this character. Counting every preview perk as simultaneously available would hide the choices imposed by the spending cap.
Hardcore has a one-way exception: its progress can benefit other rulesets, but progress elsewhere does not flow into Hardcore.[3] Check the applicable ruleset before using an account-wide planning assumption.
Reward track
Reported BlizzCon reward thresholds:[1]
| Total points earned | Reward shown |
|---|---|
| 15 | Replica Ironforge Air Rifle |
| 25 | Spectral Bear Cub |
| 40 | Spectral Bear Tabard |
| 55 | Reins of the Spectral Bear |
Treat these as reported demo targets, not guaranteed live rewards. Claim instructions, current availability, and any changed threshold need a build-specific reward-window record. A collectible threshold does not increase a character's perk allocation.
Reading perk evidence
Two details need care when comparing references:
- Tree placement: Icy Veins groups Field Guide under Resourcefulness.[1] The licensed snapshot places it in Adventure, as used in the table above.[2] This guide preserves the snapshot rather than silently moving the perk; a current client capture can resolve the difference.
- Ranks: the snapshot explicitly describes Talented as starting class-talent gains at level 9 for rank 1 and level 5 at 5/5, while retaining the 51-point total.[2] A rank-one description is not a description of every rank. For other perks, an unlabelled description remains unlabelled.
Design intent
Greenfield described Legacy as encouraging alternate characters while avoiding a compulsory advancement grind that prevents newcomers from being effective. Future expansion was discussed as a possibility.[4]
This helps explain the system's purpose; it does not establish an optimal challenge order. For the wider equipment discussion, see Discovery and itemization.
Planning a first allocation
- Write down this character's next goal: a leveling stretch, a crafting session, or regular group play.
- Read the relevant perk pages, including their recorded rank limits and evidence notes.
- Compare alternatives within the available allocation. Treat a proposed allocation as a hypothesis until you can test it.
- Record the allocation and game build when measuring a result, so another contributor can repeat the comparison.
Respec costs, complete challenge requirements, and final perk values remain unrecorded in this guide. It does not prescribe a best build or claim a tested progression route.
Common questions
- Which challenge should I do first?
- Begin with an activity you already intend to play, then inspect its actual Legacy requirement. Record the start and completion states. The available preview examples do not establish a fastest route.
- Can I copy another character's build?
- Use it as a comparison, then check your own earned points, recorded perk prerequisites, and character goal. Copying a list of perk names without their ranks can conceal an invalid allocation.
- Can I reset a mistaken allocation?
- The reset controls and any price remain unverified here. Avoid spending on the assumption that a reset is free; a screenshot of the confirmation screen would help document it.
- Will earning every point fill every tree?
- The earned total and spending limit are separate figures in the opening summary. Keep your planned allocation within the recorded cap, and check later announcements before assuming it has increased.
